Mempo Giardinelli
From Emily Mann, Hyena@rice.edu
Borges influence is also very recurrent in the novels of Mempo Giardinelli. One, in particular, Luna caliente is an Argentinian existential character's conflict and struggle with a 13-yr old girl who embodies the modern Mephistopheles of Dr. Faust's story. The doom and curse that the main character, Ramiro, feels evokes a Catoblepas from Borges which the author then ties into the Faust metaphor. You should read the story, it is quite unsettling.
